Huntsville City Schools (AL) Celebrate Breakthrough Results in 4th Grade Math Proficiency

In a recent presentation to district stakeholders, Huntsville City Schools (AL) leadership proudly shared compelling data highlighting student success through the Breakthrough Results (BTR) program. Implemented for the first time in partnership with DMGroup in Spring 2025, the program targeted 4th grade math proficiency—an urgent priority under Alabama’s Numeracy Act of 2022, which requires all K–5 students to meet grade-level proficiency in math by the end of 5th grade.

Historically, Huntsville has struggled to move the needle in 4th grade math, particularly in the areas of Measurement and Geometry. At the start of the BTR cycle, just 28.2% of 4th graders were proficient on the state’s ACAP assessment.

Over an 8-week period, 209 students participated in the Breakthrough Results program. In their presentation, district leaders shared growth data from both district-created Savvas assessments and i-Ready diagnostics, showing an average gain of 29 percentage points in student performance from pre-to post-assessment. The presentation generated excitement and optimism about what is possible when educators and students are empowered to achieve extraordinary results.

This achievement represents a breakthrough moment for Huntsville City Schools and affirms their commitment to driving student growth and closing foundational math gaps early—setting students up for long-term academic success.
