DMG at the 68th Annual Fall Conference of the Council of the Great City Schools

DMG founder and CEO, John Kim, and members of our team once again attended the 68th Annual Fall Conference in Dallas, Texas, held October 16–20 and hosted by the Dallas Independent School District. As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting urban education, DMG regularly participates in this important event, which brings together leaders from large urban school districts to share ideas and strategies for shaping the future of education. This year’s conference carried the theme "Leading Innovation & Transformation: We Do Urban Education."

As part of the program, John Kim, together with Dr. Pamela Williams, Chief Academic and Accountability Officer at Birmingham City Schools (AL), presented how Birmingham City Schools applied DMG’s Breakthrough Results approach to support improvements in third-grade literacy. Their efforts helped raise reading scores on the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) from 53% to 81% over the course of a year!

These gains were particularly important to the third-grade students of Birmingham City Schools (BCS). Per the Alabama Literacy Act passed by the state of Alabama in 2019, beginning in SY2024, students not reading at grade level by the end of the third grade could not be promoted to fourth grade.
