Too often, professional development programs fail to deliver consistent, concrete results. Presented in lecture format, useful tactics and great ideas fail to get implemented when teachers and staff return to the challenges of their daily work. While coaching has been shown to be a powerful developmental tool, the majority of coaching programs have also failed to deliver measurable results at any significant scale. We believe that the most powerful way to develop leadership capacity is not to teach leadership concepts but to have people learn leadership skills while working on a vital performance objective.

Our Approach

We believe the most powerful way to develop leadership capacity is to have people learn leadership skills while working to achieve real performance results. Rather than teach leadership concepts in professional development sessions, DMGroup’s Breakthrough Team Approach has small teams work together toward a measurable goal over a short period of time – usually eight to ten weeks. We provide just-in-time professional development and coaching while teachers and staff work in rapid cycles to achieve their goal. In this way, the training is meaningful and applicable, and participants have the opportunity to practice putting their learning into action.

How It Works

  • Districts or schools typically launch multiple teams simultaneously, with each team composed of a cross-functional group of five to seven members.
  • Each breakthrough team identifies a performance objective to achieve with a short time frame – usually 8-10 weeks
  • Teams then test innovative strategies, track weekly progress, learn quickly from successes and failures, and iterate in rapid cycles to achieve results
  • Just-in-time performance coaching and targeted professional development help team members develop the skills needed to address challenges and overcome obstacles.

With the Breakthrough Team Approach, DMGroup will help you launch multiple cross-functional teams each composed of five to seven individuals. A DMGroup dedicated coach will work with each team to set a significant, measurable performance goal. Working in rapid cycles over a period of 8-10 weeks, the DMGroup coach will support the team as they work to achieve their goal.
